Garden Lilies II

Garden Lilies II
12 x 16 Oil Painting by Pat Fiorello

I have been working on a painting of white lilies for a commission project and took the opportunity to attempt a similar subject with 3 different approaches. The latest above Garden Lilies II was done with laying in the darks, lifting out the lights and then painting from there ( as I've seen Richard Schmid and other Putney Painters use). The previous version below was done on a gray background using a method I learned from Ovanes Berberian. The first one,"White Lilies"  with a different composition was started with an underpainting of tranparents.

Not sure if I have a favorite painting or process after this comparison of approaches, but the good news is that similar end point can be achieved with several different techniques and approaches. Some freedom in seeing firsthand and experientially that there is not necessarily one way to approach things.

Any comments or observations? Do you have a favorite?

Moved on to painting white peonies in contrast to the last painting posted of bright coral peonies. Chose a darker background for this one for a more dramatic feel.

If you've been reading my Facebook page,  you may have seen that earlier this week I bought some coral and white peonies to paint. the coral ones were a little further along so I painted them first.

I did some research on how to cut peonies and stumbled across this video "Peony 101", Martha Stewart interviewing a peony expert and owner of "Peony Envy"- yes it's a real place in Bernardsville NJ.  If you'd like to see the video, click here.

I learned in Chinese culture peonies symbol good fortune, hence the name of this painting. Here are a few images on how I started this painting with a transparent underpainting.

White Lilies

White Lilies
12 x 16 Oil Painting

Sold

A new painting commissioned as a gift for a lucky lily lover. I love to paint white flowers.  They are anything but truly white- warm whites in the sunlit parts, cool whites in the shadows. Can use a range of high key colors to give the illusion of form.

Been working on some lilies in a still life set up for a commission, but decided to do a second version a little closer in with more of a garden feel.

Here was the photo for the still life, just cropped it in quite a bit to focus more on a few large flowers.

In preparation for the start of my new spring class on painting flowers in watercolor which began today, I had arranged some flowers and did a quick painting.  I documented it step by step so my students could have have a reference for the process.  I did another version of  the painting in class today as a "paint along" with the class, but wanted to share this first one along with the step by step slide show which might be of interest. Putting a few finishing touches on todays version but will share it soon.
