"I do!" 16 x 16 Oil Painting by Pat Fiorello |
I've painted this same bouquet before but found a better photo taken out in the sun and cropped in differently for a whole new view of it. The sunlight makes a huge difference. Not a big surprise, but a good reminder that "it's all about the light". In the spirit of impressionism, painting is not about the subject, but rather how the light wraps around the forms and what that light does to our impression of them. The complex and varied shapes of flowers make them intriguing subjects for studying light and shadow.
I so agree with you about sunlight. Living in the desert with gorgeous light year round, when I travel to areas with grayer or overcast skies, everything seems flat. I have to study how other professional artists paint such scenes as it can successfully be done!
ReplyDeleteYes, I notice when I go on trips and am taking photo's for inspiration to paint in the future, I take far fewer photo's on the overcast days- things just don't seem to excite me as much without the strong light and shadows.
