Tuscany Study
18 x 12 Watercolor

I have a large commission project I am working on- a 36 x 24 oil painting of a view to Tuscany through a window frame. To prepare for the painting, I did a watercolor study to help me with proportions etc. Dividing the large canvas size in half made it easy just to double up proportions on the watercolor to scale up for the oil. It also allowed me to have something that was in a fairly finished state for the client to review to get an idea of where we are headed. On this one we didn't have specific photo's that the client provided (although I have thousands of photo's of Tuscany from my many workshops taught there) so she shared what she wanted, didn't want and then gave me artistic license.
I started the oil a few days ago and have already made some compositional adjustments to get even more of a sense of depth and also define the plants and bushes in the mid-ground more specifically. Will post the final painting and any additional learning's along the way once it's done (and approved!)
The amending process of painting is ongoing, even with all the prep work. More often than not, excluding large paintings, I skip a drawing because it doesn't always translate to the canvas. Using a computer has been an aid to me. I love following your blog and seeing your Tuscan paintings. Someday I hope to paint IN Italy.
ReplyDeleteThanks Carol. There are till a couple of spots in the September 2014 Tuscany trip. We have a wonderful time being immersed in the beauty of Italy and it's open to artists of all mediums and experience levels. Happy to share more if you have any questions.
